Doris added that though she moved to Henderson, Nev., for medical school, she and Nana still go back to the Los Angeles area to visit Zyra once a month.

\"When they're reunited, they will cry and kiss and run around,\" she said. \"It's really sweet.\"

Nana is still battling the skin cancer she likely developed \"from being kept outside 24/7 by her previous owners,\" Doris said, adding that though she's frustrated and mad at Nana's original owners, she's learned a lot about forgiveness.

\"Nana has forgiven people, and she's learning to trust new people now,\" she said. \"A few months ago, she'd run the other way from a stranger. Now, she'll let a new person come up to her and pet her. She's forgiven people, so I have to also.

\"And if it weren't for her original owners, Nana wouldn't have ever come into my life, as cheesy as it sounds. She's a blessing, the epitome of forgiveness and hope,\" Doris added.

The 25-year-old said that aside for the cancer, Nana is otherwise healthy and is actually \"getting healthier as she gets older.\"

I love this blog post from www.raythevicktorydog.com. If you're involved in rescue, in whatever capacity, I highly suggest this read about compassion fatigue (CF). Below are some excerpts. \"Compassion Fatigue is emotional exhaustion, caused by the stress of caring for traumatized or suffering animals or people.\" Studies show that animal welfare workers are the most at-risk of CF and burn-out. Why? \"Largely because of the sheer number of animals that need help, who are suffering at the hands of humans.\" You can't get on social media without being inundated with stories of horrific abuse, dogs on death row, dog fighting/hoarding/puppy mill stories, etc. Of course it is important that we share those stories, but there comes a point when all the pain, all the suffering, starts to adversely affect us, sometimes leading to compassion fatigue. What causes burn-out? \"Experts say that being constantly exposed to the painful, overwhelming reality of animal abuse can cause us to shut down emotionally. Some other triggers include: Never-ending volume of animals needing assistance, Dealing with the ignorant public, Working with limited resources, Little or no life outside of work.\" I can certainly relate to some of the following symptoms of compassion fatigue and I'm sure many of you can, too. It is real, detrimental to our well-being, and more common than you might think. Some common symptoms include, \"Apathy, Hopelessness, Symptoms of stress, anxiety or depression, Exhaustion, Wanting to give up, Sudden anger or sadness, Loss of productivity, Inability to focus, and many more.\" Many of us were taught from a very early age to think first of others. To put other’s needs before our own. But we must remember to take care of ourselves as well. Because if we aren't healthy, how can we care for others? To prevent burn-out, maintain your interests outside of animal welfare. \"Make yourself leave the house and take part in social activities in the 'real world.' Spend time with friends who are not involved in rescue. Get out, experience nature. Take a walk, with a dog or alone.\" My own two cents: Take breaks. Eat ice cream every now and then. And don't forget to kiss your hippos.
