He continued: \"To be young, gifted and black, we all know what it's like to be told that there is not a place for you to be featured ... we know what it's like to be beneath and not above, and that is what we went to work with every day because we knew ... that we had something special that we wanted to give the world.\"

Boseman, who portrays the Black Panther in the blockbuster film, also thanked his peers in the actors guild.

\"We knew that we had something special that we wanted to give the world. That we could be full humans beings in the roles that we were playing. That we could create a world that exemplified a world we wanted to see,\" he said, nearly running out of his allotted time. \"It's a pleasure to be celebrated by you and to be loved by you.\"

The SAG Awards are considered by many a bellwether for the Academy Awards, which takes place next month. Over the past decade or so, the SAG ensemble winner has gone on to win Best Picture at the Academy Awards about 50 percent of the time.
