During the acceptance speech for the film, director Peter Farrelly spoke about the meaning of the film.

\"The whole story is about love,\" he said. \"It's about loving each other despite our differences and finding out the truth about who we are -- we are the same people,\" he said.

\"Green Book\" has won the 2019 Oscar for Best Picture.

He commended the film's actors, Viggo Mortensen and Mahershala Ali. \"This doesn't start without Viggo Mortensen,\" he said. \"We have no movie.\"

Farrelly also mentioned his late sister in his speech. \"I want to thank my sister Cathy. She died a week before we started shooting this but she never left my side,\" he said.

The film also won for best motion picture - musical or comedy at the 2019 Golden Globes.
