Fire danger in Southern CA, heavy snow in Dakotas
Gusty, dry winds continue to impact parts of the West including California today. Some of the wind gusts have already surpassed 50 mph in parts of Northern California, with humidity as low as 3 percent. Because of the very dry conditions, the Briceburg fire in Mariposa County has more than doubled in size, and evacuations are in effect. The fire is burning in relatively rural area near Yosemite National Park. Today the worst of the gusty dry winds will shift into Southern California, where they're called Santa Ana winds. NOAA has issued a rare extreme fire danger warning for Los Angeles and Ventura counties, with wind gusts possible up to 70 mph and very low relative humidity. With these conditions, any fire can spread very quickly. Meanwhile, a record snowfall brought nearly half a foot of snow to Billings, Montana, Wednesday.
