The suspect, later identified as 58-year-old Eddie Smith, fled on foot but was apprehended a short time later a few blocks north of where the attack took place. Authorities also located a box cutter and snow shovel.

The victim, who wished to remain unnamed, allegedly told police that he has had previous encounters with the suspect and that Smith had subjected him to verbal abuse regarding his sexual orientation, according to Boston ABC affiliate WCVB.

Smith has been charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and mayhem, and is expected to be arraigned in Roxbury District Court.
