Adderly will turn 18 before the primary in August 2022. He is expected to face off against Donna Korn, a mother of three who has served on the school board since 2011.

Broward County Public Schools is the sixth-largest school district in the nation and the second-largest in Florida, with nearly 261,000 students, according to the district's website.

Adderly said his main goal would be to represent those within the school district who he said have been ignored in the past.

\"This movement serves to amplify the voice of every child that sits in the back of a classroom and has no one to speak to. This movement serves to amplify the voice of a parent who is so afraid to send their child to school because they might not come back home at the end of the day,\" Adderly said. \"This movement serves to amplify the voice of every teacher in this district that doesn't make enough money, every bus driver that's sleeping in their car and teachers that are afraid to come out and speak on issues because they are afraid of retaliation.\"

Raphael pointed to Adderly's age, his unique racial background and tragic past as to why she believes his efforts are historic.

\"You have a young 17-year-old Afro Latino who grew up in the district, who has faced significant challenges and has chosen to stand in the face of those challenges and come from a place that is inclusive, that looks at this opportunity as a movement for young voices and for the voiceless, which includes that cafeteria worker, or that bus driver,\" Raphael said. \"It's historic in terms of his age, it's historic in terms of his demographics, it's historic in terms of what he hopes to accomplish in doing so, which is not centered around him per se, but what he represents.\"

Adderly said he hopes his campaign ultimately encourages other young people across America to run for public office and represent their own communities.

\"We believe that this movement can go nationwide, and a nationwide thing can inspire young people all over the country to get involved in local politics and [be] the main players on the stage,\" Adderly said. \"That's what this candidacy is all about. It's about opening that door and ensuring that other people can do the exact same thing.\"
