Simpson's last music release came in 2020, when she included six new songs in her \"Open Book\" audiobook. Before that, she hadn't released music since her 2010 album, \"Happy Christmas.\"

This particular cover of \"Particles\" is personal for Simpson, as she revealed earlier this month that she is four years sober.

Some of the lyrics of the song include: \"It's been like a year since I've been home / Flirting with an addiction I can't shake off / My mouth is dry, I self-medicate / This comedown won't cure itself.\"

In an Instagram post reflecting on her battle with sobriety, shared on Nov. 1, Simpson wrote: \"There is so much stigma around the word alcoholism or the label of an alcoholic. The real work that needed to be done in my life was to actually accept failure, pain, brokenness, and self sabotage.\"

\"The drinking wasn’t the issue. I was,\" she continued. \"I didn’t love myself. I didn’t respect my own power. Today I do.\"

The singer, who described herself now as \"wildly honest,\" \"comfortably open\" and \"free,\" also went on to say that she has \"made nice with the fears\" and \"accepted the parts of my life that are just sad.\"
