Oct. 28, 2013— -- More people are surviving breast cancer, thanks in part to early detection. But the disease continues to kill 40,000 American women each year.

Click here to see the key facts and figures about breast cancer.

There are steps you can take now to reduce your breast cancer risk. That's why ABC News is going pink for October: to raise awareness about breast health and how you can protect yourself.

Throughout the month, we'll bring you the latest screening recommendations, signs and symptoms to look out for, and lifestyle changes that can lower your risk. Armed with the facts, you can take our pledge to understand your risk and get the screening tests that are appropriate for you.

But because breast health should be a year-long priority, we're also giving you a listed of trusted resources. Think of them as a jumping-off point for conversations with your doctor about your personal risk factors and the tests and treatments that are right for you.
