Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was unequivocal in his rejection of the U.K., Canada and Australia recognizing a Palestinian state, saying in a statement Sunday "there will be no Palestinian state."

"It will not happen. A Palestinian state will not be established west of the Jordan River," the statement repeated.

Netanyahu also emphasized his government's expansion of West Bank settlements and says "we will continue on this path."

In a separate statement, the Israeli Foreign Ministry said the recognition "will push the desired peace further away," and that "if the countries that signed this declaration truly wish to stabilize the region, they should focus on pressuring Hamas to release the hostages and to disarm immediately."

A statement from the Hostage Families Forum said it "condemns" the announcements, saying the recognition "[turns] a blind eye to the fact that 48 hostages remain in Hamas captivity."

"We call on all nations to act responsibly and ensure that any 'day after' discussions occur only after our loved ones are brought home," the statement said, in part.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney published a statement Sunday announcing that "Canada recognises the State of Palestine," saying it "does so as part of a co-ordinated international effort to preserve the possibility of a two-state solution."

The statement calls on Hamas to release its hostages and "play no role in the future governance of Palestine," but it also criticizes the Israeli government, saying it is "working methodically to prevent the prospect of a Palestinian state from ever being established."

Carney emphasizes, "Recognising the State of Palestine, led by the Palestinian Authority, empowers those who seek peaceful coexistence and the end of Hamas. This in no way legitimises terrorism, nor is it any reward for it. Furthermore, it in no way compromises Canada’s steadfast support for the State of Israel, its people, and their security — security that can only ultimately be guaranteed through the achievement of a comprehensive two-state solution."

The United Kingdom is expected to make a similar announcement recognising a Palestinian state later Sunday, and France will host a summit on the subject with Saudi Arabia at United Nations General Assembly on Monday.

The Hamas-run Gaza Ministry of Health said in a statement on Sunday that 71 people were killed over the previous 24 hours with another 304 people injured.

The ministry said it believes a number of people are trapped under rubble as ambulances are having trouble reaching certain areas in the devastated Palestinian territory.

Four more people have also died of malnutrition in the last day, bringing the total number of deaths attributable to malnutrition to 440 -- including 147 children -- per ministry figures.

The Israel Defense Forces said in a post to X on Sunday that it intercepted one of two rockets fired toward Israel from the northern Gaza Strip.

The air force intercepted one target and the other "fell in an open area," the IDF said, adding that there were no casualties.

the IDF is continuing a major operation targeting Gaza City -- the strip's largest urban area -- that it says intends to destroy Hamas units stationed there.

The Israeli government is pressing the attack despite international concerns over the dire humanitarian situation in the Palestinian territory.

Two men were killed when a gunman opened fire at the Allenby Crossing that connects Israel and Jordan, the Israel Defense Forces said in a statement on Thursday.

Security forces killed the gunman who allegedly arrived at the crossing "in a truck transporting humanitarian aid from Jordan," according to the IDF.

A spokesperson for the Magen David Adom, Israel's national emergency medical services organization, said two men whose ages were approximately 60 and 20 years old were pronounced dead.

A statement from Hamas after the incident called it a "heroic operation."

The Allenby Crossing is one of five land border crossings between Israel and countries to the east and south, and is one of the crossing points for humanitarian aid destined for Gaza.

Jordan is investigating the shooting, its Foreign Ministry said in a post on X Wednesday.

"Jordan condemns and rejects as a violation of the law and a threat to the Kingdom's interests and its ability to deliver humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip," the Ministry of Foreign Affairs says in the post.

The statement describes the driver who allegedly opened fire as “a civilian who began working three months ago as a driver to deliver aid to Gaza.”

According to the ministry, 22 Jordanian aid trucks crossed the bridge into Israel Thursday. The ministry said it is "following up ... on the conditions of the drivers who crossed the bridge today to deliver aid to Gaza, to ensure their immediate return to Jordan."
