Eagles QB Jalen Hurts sidelined with blood clots: See a timeline of his injury

WATCH: Fallout after Eagles star quarterback Jalen Hurts suffers multiple blood clots

The news that Philadelphia Eagles star Jalen Hurts has a likely season-ending injury of blood clots has sparked questions about how the condition developed in one of the NFL's top quarterbacks.

Hurts, 28, was diagnosed earlier this month with a superficial blood clot in his leg that then traveled to his lungs, developing into deep vein thrombosis and bilateral pulmonary emboli, the Eagles said Monday in a joint statement with Hurts' agent.

A diagnosis of bilateral pulmonary emboli -- meaning there are blood clots on both Hurts' right and left lungs -- can be serious, potentially causing permanent damage to the lung, low oxygen levels in the blood and damage to other organs in the body from not getting enough oxygen.

Hurts is currently on blood thinner medication, which prevents him from playing football, according to the Eagles. The team did not provide a timeline for Hurts' potential return to the field.

Here is a timeline of Hurts' injury, according to statements provided by the Eagles organization.

Timeline of Hurts' injury

Sunday, Oct. 4 -- Hurts is "cleated" during a game against the Los Angeles Rams in Philadelphia.

Wednesday, Oct. 7 -- Hurts practices in full with Eagles team.

Thursday, Oct. 8 -- Hurts practices in full with Eagles team. After practice, he informs the Eagles' medical staff that he was cleated during the Rams game and receives treatment for a calf injury.

Friday, Oct. 9 -- Hurts receives medical treatment and practices in full with the team.

Friday, Oct. 9 into Saturday, Oct. 10 -- Hurts flies to London with Eagles team.

Saturday, Oct. 10 -- Hurts undergoes an ultrasound that reveals a superficial blood clot.

Sunday, Oct. 11 -- Sources told ESPN that Hurts was hospitalized in London until 4 a.m. on Sunday. He then plays in the Eagles' 17-19 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars. Hurts and the team fly home immediately following the loss.

Monday, Oct. 12 -- Hurts receives medical treatment.

Tuesday, Oct. 13 -- Hurts receives medical treatment.

Wednesday, Oct. 14 -- Hurts practices in full with the team. A follow-up ultrasound done in the evening shows movement in the small blood clot.

Thursday, Oct. 15 -- Eagles announce Hurts will not play in Sunday's game against the Carolina Panthers.

Sunday, Oct. 18 -- Hurts is absent from the sidelines of the Eagles' loss to the Panthers.

Monday, Oct. 19 -- The Eagles and Hurts' agent announce the quarterback has deep vein thrombosis and bilateral pulmonary emboli, and is taking blood thinner medication. As a result, he will be sidelined for an indefinite amount of time.

Deep vein thrombosis, or DVT, is when a blood clot develops in the deep veins, usually in the legs. A pulmonary embolism, or PE, occurs when a part of the DVT clot breaks off and travels to the lungs, which can be life-threatening, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
