"Girls" is returning.
Ten years after its season 6 finale in April 2017, HBO announced Tuesday that the Emmy-winning show is getting five new episodes with several returning cast members including Lena Dunham, Allison Williams, Jemima Kirke, Zosia Mamet and Andrew Rannells.
The stars came together for a video announcement shared on YouTube and social media.
The video opens with Dunham on a video call with Williams. Mamet and Kirke join afterward.
"We used to spend like every summer together, you know doing this thing that we do, making this show and is it something that you would want to do again?" Dunham asks them. "Are you free next summer?"
Kirke replies, "I mean, as long as it's not too much of a commitment. I'm not doing like a year."
After Dunham asks if everyone is in, Williams, Mamet and Kirke reply, "I'm in."
When Rannells joins the call from his bathroom, he also says he's in but "only 'cause you trash cans need constant supervision."
Dunham, who created, wrote and directed the Emmy-nominated show, will return as Hannah. Williams will return as Marnie, Kirke as Jessa, Mamet as Shoshanna and Rannells as Elijah.
The series centered around Hannah, Marnie, Jessa and Shoshanna -- four twenty-something women -- as they navigated the messy, unglamorous realities of post-collegiate life in New York City after their financial support from parents is cut off.
Judd Apatow will return as executive producer.
"We always said we would only return to GIRLS if there was a specific story we were burning to tell," Dunham said in a statement shared by HBO. "I've missed these characters, but for a long time I couldn't quite picture them in the present day."
Dunham added that around her 40th birthday, the characters came back to her she said while she was in the shower.
"It's rare that you get the chance to return to something that changed your life with the gift of hindsight and a whole new level of gratitude and understanding," she said. "I love these girls (and boy), our friends at HBO, and all the people who have continued to discover the show and remind us afresh why we do this, which is the joy of being together… and the chance to wear yellow mesh…"
Production on "GIRLS" will begin in 2027, which HBO noted will be ten years after the season 6 finale.
