Scott Eastwood on the making of 'The Outpost'

Scott Eastwood plays a real life Medal of Honor winner in his newest film "The Outpost." But he almost didn't take the role.

"To be honest, I was very timid about taking this role because I had already done a few war movies," Eastwood told ABC News. "I've done this a few times. I've played a soldier a few times. And I sort of said, I don't know. I think I've exhausted that genre."

But after researching the part, Eastwood found there was an incredible story to be told. In the film, he stars as Staff Sgt. Clint Romesha, who survived America's War in Afghanistan, where U.S. Army soldiers fought off a deadly attack by Taliban forces in 2009.

"When I looked into the story, I realized there was much more to it, that this was a huge military screw up," Eastwood said in an appearance on "Popcorn with Peter Travers." "And out of it came an incredible amount of heroism from everyday people. People who were asked to do something that was not possible. Not just the two congressional medal of honors that were given out during the Battle of Kamdesh, but 37 purple hearts."
