An Indiana judge who was shot in his home over the weekend said in a new statement the "horrific violence" will not shake his belief in peaceful resolutions to disputes.
Tippecanoe County Judge Steven Meyer and his wife, Kimberly Meyer, were both injured in the shooting on Sunday at their home in Lafayette, authorities said.
In a statement issued through the court system on Wednesday, the judge said he is receiving "excellent care" and improving after he was shot in the arm by an as-yet unknown assailant. His wife, who sustained an injury to her hip, is also "healing," he said.
"I want the community to know that I have strong faith in our judicial system," Judge Meyer said in the statement. "This horrific violence will not shake my belief in the importance of peacefully resolving disputes. I remain confident we have the best judicial system in the world, and I am proud to be a part of it."
Officers responded to the home around 2:17 p.m. Sunday and found the couple injured from the shooting, according to the Lafayette Police Department. Shell casings were recovered at the scene, according to police.
The investigation remains ongoing with multiple agencies, including the FBI, involved, police said. No arrests have been announced.
With the shooter at large, Indiana Supreme Court Chief Justice Loretta Rush has urged other judges in Indiana to "remain vigilant in your own security" and to contact their local sheriff.
In a statement issued on her and her husband's behalf on Monday, Kimberly Meyer said, "I have great confidence in the Lafayette Police Department's investigation and want to thank all the agencies involved for their work."
Meyer is a judge in the Tippecanoe County Superior Court. He was first elected to the position in 2014. He has previously served as a public defender for Tippecanoe County and on the Lafayette City Council.
