It was the performance no one could stop talking about Sunday night at the 2019 Oscars.
Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper took the stage for a stripped down, emotionally-charged rendition of their Oscar-winning "A Star Is Born" song, "Shallow."
And while Cooper may have gone home empty-handed Sunday night, Gaga hopes their performance showcased the depths of his many talents.
“I truly hope that everyone in the room, when they saw our performance, saw the true brilliant man that he is, the actor, the director, the screenplay writer, the producer, the musician,” Gaga said backstage of Cooper, who notably did not receive a best director nod for "A Star Is Born."
Gaga had previously said the reason “Shallow” connected so deeply with people was because it features a dialogue between a man and a woman where each person was being heard. But after winning her first Oscar for best original song, she reflected on the song’s other meaning.
"In this song, we provide not just a conversation, but also a very poignant statement,” she explained. “I wish to not be in the shallow, but I am. But I wish to dive off the deep end, and watch me do it.”
Gaga added, “I think this is something that speaks to many people. And during, I think, a very shallow time, it's a chance for us all to grab hands, you know, and just dive off into the water together, and swim into the deepest depths of the ocean that we can.”
The singer and Oscar-nominated actress also took to Twitter to once again gush about her co-star.
"Nothing could be more special than sharing this moment at the Oscars with a true friend and artistic genius," she shared.
