Lin-Manuel Miranda says 'Hamilton' will hit theaters this September
The hit Broadway show "Hamilton" is headed to the silver screen.
Show creator and original star Lin-Manuel Miranda announced Tuesday night that the Tony Award-winning musical will hit theaters Sept. 5 to celebrate its 10th anniversary.
"We've been celebrating all year, but we have one more way to celebrate," Miranda said on "The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon." "Sept. 5, you will be able to see 'Hamilton' in movie theaters nationwide and in Puerto Rico."
"Turn up, sing along," he added, noting that tickets would be available starting Aug. 6.
Miranda said he had always wanted to do a theatrical release of the version filmed with most of the original cast in 2016, which first streamed on Disney+ during the pandemic in July 2020.
The live-capture Disney+ version went on to win two Primetime Emmys, including outstanding variety special.
The stage production of "Hamilton," which tells the story of Founding Father Alexander Hamilton and his involvement in the American Revolution and the nation's founding, premiered off-Broadway in February 2015, hitting Broadway on Aug. 6, 2015, at the Richard Rodgers Theatre. The musical, which is based on the 2004 biography "Alexander Hamilton" by Ron Chernow, earned 16 nominations at the 2016 Tonys, taking home 11 awards total, including the coveted best musical award.
According to a synopsis, the "filmed version of the Tony, Grammy, Emmy, and Pulitzer Prize-winning Broadway smash hit 'Hamilton' combines the best elements of live theater and film in an astounding blend of hip-hop, jazz, R&B and Broadway."
"Presenting the tale of American founding father Alexander Hamilton, this revolutionary moment in theater is the story of America then, told by America now," the synopsis states.
Tickets for the "Hamilton" theatrical release are on sale now.
