Madonna Is Billboard's 2016 'Woman of the Year'
— -- Madonna has earned another honor -- the singer has been named Billboard's 2016 "Woman of the Year."
The magazine announced today that the seven-time Grammy Award winner will be honored at the 11th annual Women in Music event, to be held in New York City on Dec. 9. The awards ceremony will air on Lifetime on Dec. 12.
"Madonna is one of a miniscule number of super-artists whose influence and career transcend music," Janice Min, president and chief creative officer of The Hollywood Reporter-Billboard Media Group, said in a statement.
"With her creative vision, relentless innovation, and dedication to philanthropic causes, she is an inspiration to hundreds of millions of people around the world, all while shattering every career record out there," the statement continued. "She is an important feminist on top of that, a one-of-a-kind artist who’s used her influence to change the conversation around women, sexuality and equal rights."
It's not hard to notice that Madonna has had a standout year. Her 10th world tour, The Rebel Heart Tour, reportedly grossed $169.8 million, making her the highest-grossing female touring artist of all time.
The singer is also being honored for her philanthropic work with her organization, Raising Malawi. The nongovernmental organization, which was started in 2006, provides health and educational support to children in the African country.
Lady Gaga took the honor of Billboard's "Woman of the Year" last year. This year's tribute to Madge puts her in the ranks of other past honorees that include Taylor Swift, Pink, Katy Perry and Beyoncé.
