Michael Bolton Shows Off Funny Side on 'Saturday Night Live'

BySHEILA MARIKAR

May 9, 2011 — -- Michael Bolton can make a rockin' ballad, sure. But who knew he could make people (intentionally) laugh?

The 58-year-old singing sensation all but stole the show on "Saturday Night Live" over the weekend, appearing in the digital short/music video "Jack Sparrow" alongside Lonely Island (the comedic geniuses behind a part of the male genitalia that's unmentionable here "in a Box" and "I'm on a Boat").

When Lonely Island tries to record a club rap anthem, Bolton breaks in, crooning a "Pirates of the Caribbean"-inspired chorus on a beach, arms open wide: "This is the tale of Captain Jack Sparrow/Pirate so brave/On the seven seas."

When the Lonely Island crew trashes Bolton's "Pirates" tribute, he channels characters from other hit films, including "Forrest Gump," "Scarface" and "Erin Brockovich." (It makes more sense when you watch the video.)

The video was a coup for Bolton, whose 21st studio album, "Gems -- The Duets Collection," comes out next month. It's also a coup for the "Pirates" franchise, whose fourth installment comes out May 20.

Bolton fans have seen the singer's comedic chops before. In 2010, he made fun of himself on "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" with a sketch about Michael Bolton's School of Michael Bolton -- a school where he teaches children how to croon like him.
