While speaking to "GMA" last month, Kaling shared how "Not Suitable for Work" pulls from her own life experiences, similar to her previous projects "Never Have I Ever" and "The Sex Lives of College Girls."

Kaling said "Never Have I Ever," which spanned four seasons from 2020 to 2023, was about her high school experience, while "The Sex Lives of College Girls," which premiered in 2021 and ended in 2025 after three seasons, was about her time at Dartmouth College.

"Not Suitable for Work," Kaling said, is about the "last pivotal time in my youth, which was moving to New York City, being super ambitious, and being in our 20s."
