Fans of Salt-N-Pepa can learn more about the iconic hip hop group's origin story in a new biopic coming to Lifetime.

Cheryl "Salt" James and Sandra "Pepa" Denton of the Grammy Award-winning group appeared on "Good Morning America" on Monday to discuss their thoughts on the film and the incredible bond they've formed while making music since the '80s.

James said the film helps to highlight "the story of a friendship, a business relationship, a lot of challenges that we have overcome in our career."

"I'm so looking forward to inspiring and encouraging women to keep pushing it," she continued.

Denton added that she even learned more about their group when she watched the final cut of the biopic for the first time. "The story overall shows a lot of honesty that actually helps shape this movie," she shared.

When asked what some of their favorite songs to make together were, James said they loved creating "Shoop" from their fourth studio album, "Very Necessary."

"It was kind of a left turn for us, on a whole new level of being more creatively involved in our own careers and our own music," she shared.

James also explained what she feels is the secret to her long friendship with Denton.

"We were friends first before we were business partners, before we were Salt-N-Pepa, so that friendship is always there," she shared. "Obviously, there's a lot of ups and downs, but I always say, we had this baby called Salt-N-Pepa, and sometimes we're married and sometimes we're co-parenting, but we keep it going and we keep it moving and it's worth it."

"The friendship is worth it and the brand that we created together is worth it," she added.

The Lifetime biopic will feature some of the group's most famous songs, including "What a Man", "Shoop," "Push It" and more.

Actress GG Townson plays James, Laila Odom plays Denton and Monique Paul stars as Deidra Roper, aka DJ Spinderella, who no longer performs with the group. Roper previously claimed she was fired from the group in 2019 and also sued the group over unpaid royalties the same year.

"Salt-N-Pepa" premieres Saturday, January 23 at 8/7c on Lifetime.

Lifetime is part-owned by Disney, the parent company of ABC News.
