'Selena' returning to theaters for movie's 25th anniversary

The movie "Selena" is celebrating its 25th anniversary by returning to theaters.

"Selena," the musical biopic based on the life of Selena Quintanilla, was released in 1997 and starred Jennifer Lopez as the titular Tejano music star.

The news was announced via the late "Bidi Bidi Bom Bom" singer's social media accounts on March 21, the same day the film debuted 25 years ago.

"Rediscover a family’s story of dedication, perseverance and hope in breaking a male-dominated music genre and taking the world by storm," reads an Instagram post.

Selena, a Grammy-winning performer known as the Queen of Tejano, was born in April 1971 and saw her promising career cut short when she was tragically shot and killed in March 1995. She was 23.

The film, in addition to featuring Lopez in the lead role, starred Edward James Olmos and Constance Marie as Selena's parents and Jon Seda as her husband, Chris Pérez.

"The movie means so much to me ... Selena and her family mean so much to me, and I was so lucky to be chosen to play her," Lopez wrote on Instagram.

She continued, "I'll never forget this time in my life, and it's an honor as an artist to have been part of the magic that is this movie."

"Selena" will return to theaters beginning April 7, with additional information regarding locations and dates "coming soon," per the posts.
