Gayheart told People it has been a difficult experience for the family, but that they’re taking everything “day by day” and working with therapists along the way.

“We're just trying to have some hope and do it with dignity, grace and love," Gayheart said. "I mean, it's heartbreaking. My girls are really suffering, and we're just trying to get through it. It's a tough time."

Gayheart and Dane are parents to teenage daughters Billie and Georgia, now 15 and 13, respectively.

Dane revealed in April that he had been diagnosed with ALS, or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, a degenerative neurological disorder where motor neurons, a type of nerve cell in the brain and spinal cord, deteriorate and cause muscles to weaken and eventually leads to paralysis, according to the National Institutes of Health.

There is currently no cure for ALS. Earlier this month, Dane spoke out to push for a cure and fundraise in partnership with the movement I AM ALS.
