Drew Barrymore said her kids have recently watched her on set while filming the hit Netflix horror-comedy series "Santa Clarita Diet."

But it's the star's notable rom-coms and fantasy films that they enjoy just as much as Barrymore's fans.

"They love 'Ever After,' '50 First Dates,' and it's weird because if anyone comes over and my movie's playing I'm like I swear to God, I'm not that ego jerk that's like, 'Here kids, we're watching!''" Barrymore told "Good Morning America." "But they call it a 'mom movie' and they just enjoy watching it and I'm proud of who I am and what I've done, and especially the messages -- I made them exactly for what young girls and boys feel. We're all just trying to find love, be kind and kick some a-- here and there."

Barrymore said Olive and Frankie have also seen the 1982 fantasy film "E.T.," which she appeared in as a child.

"Olive hasn't really gravitated to it as much as I would've thought so far, but I think she'll get back into it," she said. "She loves 'The Goonies.'"

Barrymore, 44, comes from a long line of actors, starting with her great-grandparents. She said her daughter may want to join the family business.

"I always have Turner Classic Movies on in the background of the kitchen and my grandfather came on and I was like, 'Olive, there he is, there's your great-grandfather!'" Barrymore said. "I talk about John, Lionel, Ethel and she's like 'Everybody in our family is an actor.' I just said, 'But you get to do whatever you want to do' and she goes, 'I want to be an actress.' I said, 'OK, cool.' She goes, 'But I also need to be a policewoman.'"

"I was like, 'I love you so much, that's wonderful.'"

Now, Barrymore is gearing up for her third season of "Santa Clarita Diet," in which her character is a wife-turned-zombie that's in married to a still-human husband.

Barrymore said the opportunity to do the show came at the perfect time while she was trying to navigate her life after going through a divorce.

"I had stopped acting for a while to raise [my kids] and there comes those moments where you're like, 'Who am I?'" Barrymore said. "This show came along and I saw this opportunity in the first episode for this woman to find her empowerment again and she had lived this life where she was sort of stuck in a rut and I just thought, 'I'm 20 pounds overweight. My life is totally not where I thought it would be. I want to put all of this into this character.'"

Barrymore said she's happy to work on a show that has an element of fun.

"I also think in society today, we're so far out there and it's so crazy, this world, that if you don't have a show with a little spine and a little grit, it almost feels like 'Leave It to Beaver ' -- it doesn't work anymore," she said.

"I love humanity and I love humor," Barrymore added. "To me, laughter is my highest priority even when it comes to my children -- keeping them safe and happy, but laughing with them."

Season 3 of "Santa Clarita Diet" is streaming now on Netflix.
