President Donald Trump announced "major combat operations" against Iran on Feb. 28, with massive joint U.S.-Israeli strikes targeting military, government and infrastructure sites.

Following the announcement of a two-week ceasefire, initial U.S.-Iran talks in Pakistan in April failed to reach a peace deal.

Trump later announced the open-ended extension of the ceasefire and the continuation of a U.S. blockade until negotiations are concluded "one way or the other."

Hegseth calls talks with Iran 'productive'

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth called talks with Iran “productive,” but signaled the possibility of the U.S. taking military action if needed.

Referring to President Donald Trump, Hegseth said, know he means it when he looks in the camera in the Cabinet Room and said they can either do this now through a deal, and we think we're in a good place to make that deal, or they can deal with the War Department.

“We are prepared, we're postured even stronger today than we were on day one to address it that way if we have to, but he prefers not to,” Hegseth said, speaking to reporters toward the end of his trip to Singapore. “So Iran knows very, very clearly what our expectations are, and that's on the negotiating team to deliver. They're coming in our direction. The talks have been productive. I think they know where it needs to go.”

The secretary also said “the Strait of Hormuz came up relatively often” during conversations with leaders and that “the blockade is very much still in place.”

Khamenei adviser says Trump 'betraying diplomacy' by continuing blockade, making excessive demands

Mohsen Rezaei, a military adviser to Iran's supreme leader, said on X Saturday morning that U.S. President Donald Trump is "betraying diplomacy."

"As predicted, the President of the United States is betraying diplomacy for the third time," Rezaei said. "By continuing the naval blockade and making excessive demands in negotiations, he has once again proven that he is not inclined toward negotiation and is pursuing other objectives."

US military searches have not found any mines in Strait of Hormuz: US official

U.S. military searches so far have not found any Iranian mines that may have been placed in the Strait of Hormuz, according to a U.S. official.

U.S. intelligence reports have mentioned that Iran has placed mines in the Strait, according to another U.S. official, who said that at one point it was believed that Iran had placed at least a dozen mines in the waterway. Earlier Friday, President Donald Trump also once again referenced in a social media post how Iranian mines have previously been destroyed or removed by the U.S.

But U.S. military searches in the crucial waterway since the start of the war have not found definitive evidence of any mines, according to a U.S. official. Those searches have involved underwater drones and aircraft reconnaissance, according to the U.S. official.

In a statement, a U.S. Central Command spokesperson said: "U.S. military efforts for ensuring the Strait of Hormuz is fully clear of sea mines laid by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps are ongoing. We are unable to publicly discuss specifics at this time for operational security reasons."

NBC News was first to report that the U.S. has not confirmed that Iran placed mines in the Strait of Hormuz.

Trump yet to announce decision following Situation Room meeting

After meeting with his team in the Situation Room for about two hours on Friday to make a "final determination" about a deal with Iran, President Donald Trump has yet to announce a decision.

Following the meeting, a White House official said in a statement, "President Trump will only make a deal that is good for America and satisfies his redlines. Iran can never possess a nuclear weapon."

It is not clear why the president still has not announced a decision.

US and Iran making progress on interim agreement, official says

The U.S. and Iran are making progress ironing out a two-step interim agreement in which the U.S. would get a broad "commitment" from Iran to negotiate a removal of their stockpile of enriched uranium, a senior administration official said on a call with reporters on Sunday morning.

This limited agreement includes an immediate opening of the Strait of Hormuz and end to the U.S. naval blockade there, the official said, as questions of how to dispose of the stockpiled radioactive material remain.

“We're going to do a deal where ... they will open up the Strait in exchange for us lifting the blockade, and they will agree in principle to dispose of the highly enriched uranium,” the official said. “That is currently where the substantive conversation’s focused.”

“Even if we get this language in a good place, it is going to take days for it to filter through their system and get an approval,” the official added.

The official offered no specific details on timing, both regarding how long this peace negotiation process could last and how long the nuclear material removal process could take.

Trump posted on his social media platform Saturday that “an Agreement has been largely negotiated” between the U.S. and Iran, “subject to finalization” between the parties involved. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Sunday that the deal’s "ultimate goal is that Iran can never have a nuclear weapon."

Iran has not yet signed on to or publicly commented on the proposal.
