Over 1 million Jeep Gladiator, Wrangler vehicles voluntarily recalled
The automaker that manufactures Jeep vehicles is voluntarily recalling more than 1 million Jeep Gladiators and Wranglers due to a potential fire risk.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration announced the recall in a press release Tuesday. FCA US, the company behind Stellantis North America, confirmed the recall to ABC News on Wednesday.
What to know about Jeep recall
According to the NHTSA, 1,076,999 Jeep Gladiator and Wrangler vehicles with model years between 2021 and 2025 are included in the recall.
Recalled vehicles may have a faulty electrical connection in the electric hydraulic power steering pump wiring that could cause "combustible materials to overheat and potentially catch fire," even if a vehicle is turned off and not in use, the agency said.
The NHTSA said the recall follows the agency's investigation into reports of 51 fires and one injury likely connected to the electrical issue.
What Jeep owners are advised to do
The NHTSA said anyone with a recalled Jeep Gladiator or Wrangler should park their vehicle "outside and away from other vehicles and buildings until their vehicle has been repaired."
"FCA will notify owners when a recall remedy is available, and owner notification letters are expected to be mailed on July 9," the agency said in its press release.
FCA US LLC said in a statement to ABC News that the company will "repair or replace the wiring harness and/or electric hydraulic power steering pump" of recalled vehicles "if necessary."
FCA said it will notify Jeep owners by first-class mail when repair services can be scheduled.
"FCA US is working diligently to accelerate remedy availability and anticipates a solution no later than July," the company said. "The company urges owners to follow the instructions on their recall notices. Recalled vehicle IDs and license plates can be found on the NHTSA website starting Thursday, the agency said. Owners can also contact the NHTSA's Vehicle Safety Hotline at 888-327-4236.
FCA said it anticipates more than 254,000 vehicles will also be recalled in Canada, Mexico and markets outside of North America.
