— -- A 101-year-old man was rescued from the rubble of his home in one of the countless villages that were devastated in the earthquake that hit Nepal last week, killing more than 7,000 people.

Nepal's National Emergency Operation Center said the rescue occurred in Kimtang village, in the Nuwakot district, about 50 miles northwest of Kathmandu.

A police official told Agence France Press that Phanchu Tamang -- whose name is also spelled Fenchu -- had only minor injuries, despite being trapped in his demolished home since the earthquake hit on April 25.

"He was brought to the district hospital in a helicopter. His condition is stable," police officer Arun Kumar Singh told AFP.

3 Americans Describe How They Survived for Days After Nepal Earthquake

The death toll has climbed to 7,276, including 45 Nepalese and six foreigners found over the weekend on a popular trekking route, government administrator Gautam Rimal said.

Officials have said they fear that number will climb much higher as search and rescue teams reach more and more of the mountainous country's isolated villages.

Laxi Dhakal, a Home Ministry official, said hopes of finding survivors had faded dramatically.

"Unless they were caught in an air pocket, there is not much possibility," he said.

The U.N. says the quake affected 8.1 million people, which is more than a quarter of Nepal's 28 million people.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
