A Chicago police officer was killed and another was in critical condition after a suspect opened fire while in custody inside a hospital, officials said.

Officers brought the unidentified suspect, who was in custody, to the Endeavor Health Swedish Hospital around 9 a.m. on Saturday for treatment, police and the hospital said. The suspect was scanned with weapon-detection tools by hospital security, the hospital said in a statement.

Around 11 a.m. the suspect got a hold of a firearm, began shooting and fled, according to the hospital. Two officers were shot, one of whom was pronounced dead at the hospital, police said.

"No team members or patients were physically harmed as a result of this incident," Endeavor Health said in a statement.

The suspect was apprehended a short time later. The suspect's name has not been released.

The officer who was killed was identified as 38-year-old John Bartholomew, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office. He was a 10-year veteran of the police department, according to Chicago ABC affiliate station WLS.
