4 killed, 5 rescued after boat capsizes near San Diego beach: Coast Guard
Four people were killed and five others were rescued after a boat allegedly carrying undocumented immigrants capsized near a San Diego beach Friday night, the U.S. Coast Guard said.
Around 11:40 p.m. local time, the Coast Guard said it received information from Imperial Beach Border Patrol of a capsized panga-style vessel in the surf near Seacoast Drive in Imperial Beach.
Six of the passengers were found on the beach, one of whom was pronounced dead at the scene by EMS, the Coast Guard said.
About two hours later, a bystander reported a person in the water near Imperial Beach Pier, the Coast Guard said. The Coast Guard said it discovered three more people in the water, all of whom were declared dead.
Of the survivors, four were taken to a nearby hospital, and one individual was transferred to a Department of Homeland Security agency, according to the Coast Guard.
Station San Diego boatcrew and a Coast Guard Air Station Ventura aircrew are searching the water for additional survivors, officials said. The incident remains under investigation.
