Dense fog causes pileup on California highway involving at least 50 cars

Dense fog has caused a massive crash scene on a California highway involving more than 50 cars, according to officials.

The accident occurred on Highway 99, which was closed in both directions from Avenue 24 to the Kern County line, according to the Tulare County Fire Department.

At least 59 cars were involved in the accident, which occurred around 8:17 am. Saturday, according to California Highway Patrol.

Multiple people sustained injuries ranging from minor to moderate, police said.

Dense fog played a role in the incident, according to the County of Tulare.

Visibility was limited to about 100 to 200 feet as a result of the fog, California Highway Patrol Officer Adrian Gonzalez told ABC Fresno station KFSN.

The county urged drivers to not rely on automatic headlights during fog conditions, while police advised drivers to slow down, increase following distance and remain alert, "especially" in low-visibility or congested conditions.

Several people were hospitalized, KFSN reported. It is unclear if there were any fatalities.
