A juvenile has been arrested for the murder of a 10-year-old girl in Alabama, authorities said.

The little girl, identified as Katheryn Bigbee, was found dead inside a home on Friday night, Piedmont police said.

The suspect, only identified as a juvenile, was taken into custody and charged with murder, police said.

The suspect and victim are both from Piedmont, according to Piedmont Police Chief Nathan Johnson. The chief did not elaborate on their connection but said Piedmont is a small town where everyone knows everyone.

Piedmont Elementary School officials called Katheryn a "sweet little girl who brought smiles, kindness, and a bright light to our halls each day."

Johnson said in a statement, "This is a heartbreaking situation for everyone involved and for our entire community."

"We ask that you keep the family affected by this tragedy in your thoughts and prayers during this incredibly difficult time," he said.
