— -- First "Twin Peaks" is coming back, and now, Special Agent Cooper.

Kyle MacLachlan will reprise his role as the much-loved FBI agent when the cult series makes its limited return to television next year just in time for the show's 25th anniversary.

MacLachlan made the announcement himself during Showtime's Television Critics Association presentation on Monday.

"I think you need a damn good cup of coffee," MacLachlan told the audience using one of his character's catchphrases. "I'm very excited to return to the strange and wonderful world of 'Twin Peaks.' May the forest be with you."

Series creator David Lynch quickly passed the news on to fans.

The cult favorite will pick up 25 years later from where it left off in 1991, when the offbeat ABC drama was canceled after two seasons. The new limited series will provide “long-awaited answers for the series’ passionate fan base,” Showtime said in a statement in October.

Lynch and Mark Frost, creators of the original series, will write and produce all nine episodes of the limited series. Lynch is also on board to direct every episode, with production starting in 2015.

Widely considered groundbreaking at the time and a precursor to today’s edgy cable series, “Twin Peaks” followed the residents of a quaint town in the Pacific Northwest who are stunned by the murder of their homecoming queen, Laura Palmer. When FBI agent Dale Cooper, played by MacLachlan, comes to town to investigate the case, the town's secrets are gradually exposed.
