Massachusetts Bus Driver Accused of Driving Under the Influence with Students on Board
— -- Several Cape Cod, Massachusetts high schoolers are home safe after a man was accused of driving their school bus while under the influence of liquor.
A woman told Massachusetts State Police that her daughter -- a student at Cape Cod Regional Technical High School -- called her from the school bus Friday because she was worried that the driver's behavior was unsafe. She told her mother she planned to get off at the next stop, State Police said.
Police located the bus in a Burger King parking lot and found five students still on board, police said in a press release.
The driver, 62-year-old Everett W. Redmond Jr. of Brewster, was arrested at the scene. He was charged with operating under the influence of liquor and child endangerment while operating a motor vehicle under the influence of liquor, police said.
Redmond was taken to the State Police in Yarmouth and will be arraigned at Barnstable District Court Monday, police said.
Robert Sanborn, Superintendent at Cape Cod Regional Technical High School, said in a statement: "Cape Cod Regional Technical High School is pleased to report that all students on the bus are home safe with their families this evening."
"This afternoon a Cape Destination's driver entrusted with transporting our students to and from school was taken into police custody after one of our students called her mother to report her bus driver was driving erratically... Both mom and student are heroes today as they kept the driver from continuing his route," Sanborn's statement said.
Cape Destinations is cooperating with the authorities, a representative told ABC News, but the company will not comment until the investigation is complete.
