In Memoriam: Notable people who died in 2026

David Hockney attended the Royal College of Art in London in the 1960s, where he was awarded their Gold Medal. In 1964, he visited Los Angeles, and moved there in 1976. Hockney painted vibrant canvases of such subjects as LA, England, swimming pools and his beloved dachshunds. He created photo colleges in the 1980s and experimented with techniques old and new. Hockey was awarded the Order of Merit from Queen Elizabeth II in 2012. One of his paintings sold for $90.3 million in 2018, setting a record at the time for the most expensive artwork by a living artist ever sold at auction.
