Oprah Winfrey's 'Favorite Things' Episode Gifts Audience With New VW Beetle

ByEMILY FRIEDMAN

Nov. 22, 2010 — -- From diamond earrings, an iPad and a brand new car, Oprah Winfrey succeeded for the last time at sending unexpecting audience members into hysterics during part two of her legendary "Ultimate Favorite Things" episode.

On the heels of part one of the episode, which aired last week, Winfrey shocked yet another group of guests with another round of gift giving in which hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of goodies were doled out.

"Oh yeah, oh yeah, I gotcha, I gotcha!" screamed Winfrey as fake snow began to fall over the stunned studio.

The first gift bestowed -- an Apple iPad -- came down from the ceiling flanked by angel wings as Winfrey explained that it is her "No. 1 favorite thing ever."

"I know it's wrong to be in love with a thing, and I don't normally recommend it," she said, proclaiming the popular gadget the "best invention of the century so far."

But the screams of the audience only escalated, peaking when Winfrey unveiled the never-before-seen 2012 Volkswagen Beetle, keys to which were given to each guest in the studio.

A massive gift box was opened to reveal the silhouette of the new car to the audience -- the first group in the world to get behind the wheel of the redesigned vehicle.

"The Beetles are coming!" screamed Winfrey.

Acknowledging that her "Favorite Things" shows are often mocked for their extravagance, Winfrey said, "You are all in a Saturday Night Live skit, but that's OK."

"It's not really about all the gifts," she said. "Although the stuff is really fun it really for me is about hope. It's about knowing that something really magical and joyful and wonderful can happen to you when you least expect it."

Winfrey also gave the audience several items of clothing, including a cashmere sweater and matching leggings from Magaschoni, which she dubbed "luxurious with a capital L."

Ugg boots covered in sequins and a patent-leather Coach bag that cost nearly $400 were handed out, as were jars of Winfrey's favorite moisturizer, Hope in a Jar by Philosophy.

Breaking into song, Winfrey belted out, "Deck the halls with bras aplenty, fa la la la la, la la la la," as she presented each guest with two $500 gift certificates to Nordstrom's lingerie department.
