Quadruple amputee cornhole champion facing murder charges in fatal shooting
A Maryland man who is a quadruple amputee cornhole champion is facing murder charges for allegedly shooting and killing someone in his vehicle, authorities said.
Dayton James Webber, 27, is accused of fatally shooting the front seat passenger of his vehicle during an argument in La Plata, Maryland, on Sunday and then fleeing to Virginia, according to the Charles County Sheriff's Office.
The victim -- identified as 27-year-old Bradrick Michael Wells -- was found dead in a yard in Charlotte Hall, Maryland, according to the sheriff's office.
"We don't know what the argument was about, and that's something hopefully we learn," Charles County Sheriff's Office spokesperson Diane Richardson told WJLA, the ABC affiliate for the Washington, D.C., area.
Two people who were in the back seat of the vehicle witnessed the deadly shooting, the sheriff's office said. Webber allegedly asked them for their help in disposing of the body, but they refused, got out of the car, left the scene and ultimately flagged down officers with the La Plata Police Department, authorities said.
On how Webber allegedly committed the deadly shooting, Richardson told WJLA that she would "simply refer people to the Internet, and they could go to his YouTube page," which includes a video of the suspect loading and firing a handgun.
The witnesses reported the shooting shortly before 10:30 p.m. Sunday, according to the Charles County Sheriff's Office. Nearly two hours later, an individual reported the victim's body in a yard in Charlotte Hall, according to the sheriff's office, which said it then obtained a warrant for Webber's arrest.
An officer with the Albemarle County Police Department subsequently located Webber's vehicle at a gas station in Charlottesville, Virginia, authorities said. The suspect was then found at a nearby hospital seeking treatment for an unspecified medical issue, taken into custody upon his release and charged as a fugitive from justice, authorities said.
Webber is awaiting extradition to Charles County, where he will be charged with first-degree murder, second-degree murder and other charges, the Charles County Sheriff's Office said.
Webber, Wells and the two other passengers in the vehicle were all known to each other, the sheriff's office said.
The incident remains under investigation.
It is unclear if Webber has an attorney. ABC News has attempted to reach out to a representative for comment through his sponsorship email.
Webber is a notable professional cornhole player who was profiled by ESPN in 2023. He was crowned the best cornhole player in Maryland in 2020 and he competed in the American Cornhole League World Championships the following year, according to ESPN.
The American Cornhole League addressed his arrest, saying in a statement on Monday, "This is an extremely serious matter and our thoughts are with all those impacted, including the family and loved ones of Bradrick Michael Wells."
"At this time, this remains an active legal situation," the statement continued. "We respect the judicial process and will not comment on specific allegations or details while proceedings are ongoing."
Webber called cornhole his "calling" in the ESPN feature. He became a quadruple amputee after contracting a bacterial infection that led to sepsis at 10 months old, according to ESPN.
