Authorities said three people suffered minor injuries, including an officer, when a man opened fire at the sheriff's office in Shoshone County in northern Idaho.

Speaking at a Friday night press conference, Sheriff William Eddy said the suspected gunman, who was shot and killed by officers, first opened fire on the street outside the sheriff's office in the city of Wallace.

Two women sitting in a vehicle were shot in the leg, suffering minor injuries, Eddy said.

Then the suspect entered the sheriff's office and fired into the dispatch center, nicking an officer in the ear, Eddy told reporters.

The incident began unfolding about 2:30 p.m. local time, spurring a large law enforcement presence as multiple agencies responded to the sheriff's office.

Eddy said the shooter was taken down in what he called an "officer-involved shooting" at about 4:15 p.m. He did not say how many officers fired their weapons.

He said the neighboring Kootenai County Sheriff's Office and Coeur d'Alene Police Department are handling the criminal investigation and Idaho State Police is handling the officer-involved shooting investigation.

Earlier, law enforcement sources told ABC News that the armed suspect was barricaded in the building and that SWAT had responded, according to the sources.

Authorities have not released any information about the suspected shooter.

Wallace, the county seat of Shoshone County, is a city of about 1,000 people and is located in the northern panhandle of Idaho.

The neighboring Mineral County Sheriff's Office said earlier Friday it was "sending reinforcement to help our neighbor," describing it as an active shooter incident.
