There's nothing quite like leaving the salon with a fresh blowout. The good news? With the right prep and a few simple tricks, you can help that freshly styled look last well beyond your appointment.

Eric Marshall Wright, senior stylist and owner of Eric Marshall Salon, shared his best tips for extending the life of a professional blowout, from the products you should use to how you sleep on your hair.

Tip 1: Start with the right products

Making your blowout last actually starts before the blow dryer comes out. Wright recommends using lightweight products designed to protect hair from heat, humidity and frizz.

A blow-dry spray with anti-humidity benefits can help, along with a lightweight serum that helps smooth and straighten the hair. A primer that offers heat protection and extended frizz control can also create a good foundation for your style.

When it comes to product, more isn't necessarily better.

"Less is more when using products to help the blowout," Wright said, explaining that using too much can weigh down the hair and potentially prevent your style from lasting as long.

If your hair tends to get oily quickly, your wash routine can make a difference, too. Wright recommends shampooing twice before a blowout to thoroughly remove oil and product buildup, followed by a lightweight conditioner. Shampooing only once can sometimes redistribute buildup rather than fully removing it.

Tip 2: Protect your blowout while you sleep

What you do before bed can be one of the biggest factors in how your blowout looks the next morning.

For those prone to oily roots, Wright recommends applying dry shampoo at night rather than waiting until the next morning. This allows the product to absorb excess oil as you sleep and can help preserve the blowout before roots start looking greasy.

A bonnet or silk scrunchie can also help protect your style overnight. If you're putting your hair up, choose something soft that won't leave a noticeable crease in the hair.

Tip 3: Refresh only the areas that need it

By day two or three, you don't necessarily need to redo your entire blowout. Instead, Wright recommends focusing on the sections that have actually lost their shape.

If you have bangs, for example, re-wet and restyle just your bangs rather than wetting the rest of your hair. For other sections that need a boost, look for a lightweight product designed to reactivate your style, apply it only where needed and quickly re-blow-dry those areas.

Flat roots can get a lift from a volumizing dry shampoo, while frizz can be addressed with a small amount of lightweight hair oil. Wright suggests flipping your head over and working the product from the mid-shaft to the ends, concentrating a small amount on the ends rather than applying it near the roots.

And don't underestimate a simple hairbrush. Brushing can help distribute the hair's natural oils from the roots through the lengths, helping refresh the look without adding another layer of product.

Extending a blowout isn't necessarily about piling on more products or completely restyling your hair every morning. Strategic prep, protecting your hair overnight and touching up only the areas that need attention can help keep that fresh-from-the-salon look going for several days.
