Anne Hathaway celebrates 20th anniversary of 'The Princess Diaries': 'Miracles happen'

WATCH: Anne Hathaway confirms there's a script for another 'Princess Diaries' movie

Anne Hathaway is celebrating the 20th anniversary of "The Princess Diaries," the beloved 2001 movie that helped launch her film career.

"Miracles happen," the actress began, referencing Myra's song "Miracles Happen (When You Believe)" from the movie's soundtrack. "Happy 20th Birthday to #theprincessdiaries, AKA the film that launched a thousand sleepovers," she continued, adding a crown emoji.

In "The Princess Diaries," Hathaway plays Mia Thermopolis, a not-so-popular teenage girl who finds out she is the heir to the throne of the fictional European country of Genovia and must choose between embracing her royal destiny or renouncing it entirely.

Hathaway's Instagram post included photo stills from the movie, featuring cast members such as Julie Andrews, who played Clarisse Renaldi, Mia's grandmother and the Queen of Genovia; Heather Matarazzo, who played Mia's best friend, Lilly; Mandy Moore, who played Lana, a popular girl who bullied Mia; and Sandra Oh, who played Mia's school principal.

There was even a behind-the-scenes image of Hathaway and Andrews alongside Garry Marshall, the film's director. Marshall passed away in 2016.

"The Princess Diaries" had its premiere at Hollywood's El Capitan Theatre on July 29, 2001, and hit theaters a few days later on Aug. 3.

The film spawned a sequel, 2004's "The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement." Fans have been clamoring for a third movie ever since -- doing so most recently in the comments of Hathaway's anniversary post.
