Jennifer Lopez and Alex Rodriguez joined a Black Lives Matter protest this past weekend in Los Angeles -- and her 12-year-old son, Max, had something to do with it.
In an Instagram post, Lopez shared that Max pointed out that because the singer has "a following like some of my YouTuber gamers," she should use her platform to speak out in support of George Floyd, a black man who was killed last month by a white police officer while being put under arrest in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
Lopez responded by telling Max, "I am planning a few things," and asked for his help making a sign. In the end, Max's twin sister, Emme, pitched in too.
"We talked about how if one person doesn’t have justice then no one does. That this country was built on the belief of freedom and justice for all," Lopez wrote. "We must take a stand for what we believe in and fight against the injustices in this world. So we continue to peacefully protest until there is change."
The death of George Floyd has sparked protests around the world, and ultimately led to the Minneapolis city council voting on Sunday to dismantle its police department. Derek Chauvin, the former Minneapolis police officer who kept his knee on Floyd's neck for eight minutes despite his cries of, "I can't breathe," has been charged with second-degree murder, third-degree murder and manslaughter. The three other officers involved with Floyd's fatal arrest have been charged with aiding and abetting second-degree murder and aiding and abetting manslaughter. All four officers were fired.
