Don't call Gabrielle Union a 'basketball wife'
Gabrielle Union is turning the tables in an effort to expose subconscious gender bias when referring to women married to athletes.
The acclaimed actress is married to NBA star Dwyane Wade, and in a recent interview, she said doesn't want to be called a "basketball wife."
Explaining how silly that term for women is, she described NBA champion Wade to InStyle as a “Hollywood husband.”
“How about Dwyane Wade is Gabrielle Union’s husband? There are no stereotypes or terms for men who are married to successful women. It’s only in the reverse,” she added.
The magazine points out how successful Union has been on and off screen, starting her own fashion collection, creating her own wine and even writing best-selling books.
"I was already me and fully formed, financially solvent, and educated," she said about when she met Wade a few years back.
"I recommend you come in fully formed before going into a relationship because that whole Jerry MacGuire ‘you complete me’ bull -- is exactly that. You complete you, and then find your person,” she told InStyle.
Last year, the duo welcomed a daughter, via a surrogate. At the time, she posted about the miracle baby and how happy the couple was.
"We are sleepless and delirious but so excited to share that our miracle baby arrived last night via surrogate and 11/7 will forever be etched in our hearts as the most loveliest of all the lovely days," they wrote. "Welcome to the party sweet girl!"
Union, 46, and Wade, 37, wed in 2014 and had been trying to conceive a child for years. In 2017, the actress wrote in her memoir, "We're Going to Need More Wine," that she'd had "eight or nine" miscarriages.
