The World War I film "1917" and Quentin Tarantino's "Once Upon a Time ... in Hollywood" were the big winners on Sunday as some of the brightest stars in Hollywood were honored at the 77th Golden Globe Awards.

Sam Mendes' "1917" surprised by earning the award for best motion picture, drama, with Mendes also grabbing the best director award for the film.

Tarantino's film was a hit, taking home three awards: best motion picture, musical or comedy; best screenplay, motion picture; and Brad Pitt's win for best supporting actor for the film.

Echoing the Emmys last fall, Phoebe Waller-Bridge's "Fleabag" was a top winner in the TV categories.

The BBC show won the award for best television series, musical or comedy, and Waller-Bridge snagged the best actress in a TV series award.

Other winners included Joaquin Phoenix, who secured the best performance by an actor in a motion picture drama award for "Joker," and Renée Zellweger, who received the best actress in a drama award for "Judy."

Comedian Ricky Gervais was back for a fifth time to host the star-studded show, and unsurprisingly delivered several controversial jokes throughout the night.
