Guam braces for Super Typhoon Bavi, which may hit at Category 5 hurricane strength
Residents of the U.S. territory of Guam are bracing for potentially catastrophic conditions from Super Typhoon Bavi, which may hit the Western Pacific island as a Category 5 storm.
Super Typhoon Bavi has winds of 145 mph, which is the equivalent of a Category 4 hurricane, as of Friday morning ET, which is very early Saturday morning in Guam.
Sustained winds could reach an unprecedented 175 mph by Saturday afternoon local time.
The super typhoon is expected to pass between Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands on Sunday night and Monday morning local time, which is Sunday morning and Sunday afternoon ET.
Winds near the center of the typhoon could be around 165 mph as it passes the islands, equivalent to a Category 5 hurricane.
Five to 10 inches of rain are possible from Sunday morning through Wednesday afternoon. Waves could reach up to 30 feet and major flooding is possible.
The National Weather Service urges those in Guam to begin preparing their homes, listen for possible warnings and be ready to evacuate if necessary.
