Among the actors nominated for Academy Awards this year were eight first-timers and four Oscar winners.
Rami Malek, Olivia Colman, Marina de Tavira, Yalitza Aparicio, Regina King, Richard E. Grant, Sam Elliott and Adam Driver were all nominated for the very first time, while Christian Bale, Rachel Weisz, Mahershala Ali and Sam Rockwell have already won. Three of those first-time nominees are now become Oscar winners: Rami Malek, Olivia Colman and Regina King. Mahershala Ali was the only acting nominee that had already won an Oscar to win another award on Sunday.

Christian Bale, 45, was first nominated for an Academy Award in 2011 for his performance in "The Fighter." He won his first Oscar that year at the 83rd Academy Awards for best supporting actor. Bale went on to be nominated for best actor in "American Hustle" in 2014 and for best supporting actor in "The Big Short" in 2016 but hasn't won an Oscar since his first. This year the actor, who has been acting since he was 12, was nominated for best actor for his performance as Dick Cheney in "Vice." He lost the award to Rami Malek. Bradley Cooper, 44, nominated as best actor for "A Star is Born," a movie he also directed and adapted the screenplay for, was first nominated for an Academy Award in 2013 for "The Silver Linings Playbook." Cooper, who has been acting in movies since the age of 26, lost that year to Daniel Day-Lewis for his performance in "Lincoln." He was also nominated the next year for best supporting actor in "American Hustle" and in 2015 for best actor in "American Sniper." He co-produced "American Sniper," which was also up for best picture that year, so he earned another Oscar nod there. Cooper has yet to win an Oscar. Here Cooper is at the Oscars in 2010 and in 2019.

Willem Dafoe, 63, was first nominated for an Academy Award in 1987. He was recognized that year for his performance as Sergeant Elias in "Platoon," but failed to win the Oscar. He's been nominated twice since, once in 2001 for best support actor in "Shadow of the Vampire" and again in 2018 for best supporting actor in "The Florida Project." The actor, who has been working in films since he was 24, was up for best actor for his performance as Vincent van Gogh in "At Eternity's Gate." Rami Malek, 37, was up for his very first Oscar this year for his performance as Freddie Mercury in "Bohemian Rhapsody," and he took home the esteemed award. Malek made his film debut at 25. Viggo Mortensen, 60, was nominated for best actor in "Green Book," his third time being nominated in the category. Mortensen was previously nominated for best actor in 2017 for his performance in "Captain Fantastic" and in 2008 for best actor in "Eastern Promises," but has yet to win an Oscar. Glenn Close, "The Wife"

Glenn Close, 71, earned her seventh Oscar nomination overall this year with a best actress nod for "The Wife." She began acting in movies at age 33, and her film debut, in "The World According to Garp," earned her her very first Oscar nomination for best supporting actress. She went on to be nominated twice more in this category, in 1983 for "The Big Chill" and in 1984 for "The Natural." She then went on to be nominated for best actress in 1987, 1988 and 2011 for her performances in "Fatal Attraction," "Dangerous Liaisons" and "Albert Nobbs." Close has yet to win an Academy Award.

Lady Gaga, "A Star Is Born"

While this year was the 32-year-old's first best actress nomination for her role as Ally in "A Star Is Born", it's not the her first red carpet, or even her first Academy Award nomination. The artist first attended the 2014 Oscars, when she showed up on the red carpet as the new face of Versace. The ASIB actress previously performed at the 2015 Oscars, with a medley of songs from "The Sound of Music," and at the 2016 Oscars, where she sang "Til It Happens to You" from the documentary "The Hunting Ground," which was nominated for best original song. Melissa McCarthy, "Can You Ever Forgive Me?"

This was the second Oscar nomination for Melissa McCarthy, 48, who portrayed author Lee Israel in the drama "Can You Ever Forgive Me?" McCarthy, who started acting in movies at age 28, was previously nominated for best supporting actress for her breakout role in the hit comedy "Bridesmaids," but lost to Octavia Spencer in "The Help" in 2012. The actress said years later that she struggled to find a designer to dress her for her first Oscars red carpet. "I asked five or six designers -- very high-level ones who make lots of dresses for people -- and they all said no," the actress told Redbook in 2014, eventually deciding on a ready-to-wear gown by Marina Rinaldi. She presented the awards for Best Animated Short Film and Best Animated Feature Film alongside Paul Rudd the next year at the 85th Academy Awards. Olivia Colman has come a long way since starring in the British comedy "Peep Show." Although she has been a darling of the stage and screen in the U.K. for more than a decade, starting her movie career at age 30, the 45-year-old has started picking up steam in the U.S. in recent years, winning a 2017 Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress in TV series "The Night Manager." The English-born actress has garnered critical acclaim and earned her first Oscar nomination for her role as Queen Anne in "The Favourite," alongside her Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz. This is the first Academy Award nomination for newcomer Yalitza Aparicio, who plays the lead role of Cleo in Alfonso Cuaron's Spanish-language film, "Roma." The best actress nomination is quite spectacular seeing how "Roma" is the 25-year-old Aparicio's first film. She's actually a schoolteacher and auditioned for the part after accompanying her sister and wanted to try out for the role herself. Aparicio is now the second Mexican actress and first indigenous person to land an best actress Oscar nomination. This is the second Oscar nomination for Mahershala Ali. The 44-year-old was nominated for his role as Dr. Don Shirley, a black world-class pianist who hires a Bronx bouncer, played by Viggo Mortensen, to be his driver on a tour of the deep south in the 1960s. Ali first started to act in movies at age 29, and in 2017, he became the first Muslim actor to win an Academy Award for "Moonlight." Adam Driver was up for his first Oscar for his role of Detective Philip "Flip" Zimmerman in Spike Lee's "BlacKkKlansman." Driver, who started acting in movies at age 28, first gained prominence for his performance in HBO series "Girls" in 2012, but earned widespread recognition for his role as Kylo Ren in the new "Star Wars" trilogy beginning in 2015. Win or lose, this nomination solidifies the 35-year-old as one of the fastest-rising stars in Hollywood. After a long and storied career, Sam Elliott was up for his first Oscar this year. The 74-year-old's deep drawl makes him a perfect candidate for Westerns, where he built up a steady portfolio when he first started his film career at age 23. In fact, Bradley Cooper has said Elliott's voice is so iconic that he studied it when developing his "A Star Is Born" character Jackson Maine. Despite a roster of nearly 70 films, this was the 61-year-old Grant's first Oscar nomination and he was over the moon. The versatile actor was nominated for best supporting actor for his performance as Jack in "Can You Ever Forgive Me?" Upon hearing the news of his nomination, Grant posted a video on Twitter from the Notting Hill flat he used to live in nearly 36 years ago. "I can't believe that I'm standing here ... having an Oscar nomination." Grant, who started acting in movies at age 30, is pictured attending the BAFTAs in 1999 and making his Oscars red carpet debut in 2019.

Sam Rockwell has found a great career in playing multi-faceted characters with their own set of eccentricities. Last year, the 50-year-old won best supporting actor in "Three Billboards Outside Ebbings, Missouri." This year, he was up for an award in the same category for his portrayal of George W. Amy Adams, who started acting in movies when she was 24, has been up for an Academy Award five times. Her first nomination came in 2006 for her breakout role in the film "Junebug". This year, the 44-year-old was nominated as best supporting actress for her role as Lynne Cheney in "Vice," her fifth nomination in this category, where she plays the wife of the former vice president from ages 20 to 70. This was Regina King's first Academy Award nomination and first win. The actress won the award for her role as matriarch Sharon Rivers in "If Beale Street Could Talk." King also won the Golden Globe for her role in the film, which is based off the 1974 novel of the same name by James Baldwin. King, 48, who started acting in films when she was 20, pledged in her Globes acceptance speech to hire at least 50 percent women for all future projects and called on others in Hollywood to do the same. This was the first Oscar nomination for Mexican actress Marina de Tavira, who plays Sra. Sofia, the employer to best actress nominee Yalitza Aparicio's character Cleo in "Roma." Director Alfonso Cuaron pulled from his own life to develop the characters in this film and has said that 44-year-old Tavira's character is based off his own mother. De Tavira has been acting in movies since she was 25.

This is Emma Stone's third Academy Award nomination. The 30-year-old actress, who began her movie career at 19, was previously nominated for her roles in 2017's "La La Land" and 2015's "Birdman." In "The Favourite," she plays the manipulative Abigail, who's battling with her cousin -- fellow category nominee Rachel Weisz -- to be the queen's favorite in this 18th-century period piece.
