How to make a healthy homemade shamrock shake

St. Patrick's Day is fast approaching and the festive green frozen treat season that fans know and love is still going strong.

Searches for “shamrock shake recipes” have spiked 5,000% in the last 90 days, according to Google Search data, so "Good Morning America" found a frothy fit for fans of the sweet treat to whip up at home.

Registered dietitian Brooke O’Connell, who works in research and development for Optimum Nutrition, shared a recipe with "GMA" for a healthy spin on the minty St. Patrick's Day shake.

"You can make this festive, high-protein option at home with ON Gold Standard 100% Whey and fresh ingredients. It's colorful, delicious and packed with 24 grams of high-quality protein," she said.

Better-for-you Shamrock Shake

Makes: One 8-ounce shake

Ingredients

2 frozen bananas

1/4 cup non-dairy milk

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 scoop ON Gold Standard 100% Whey Vanilla or favorite protein powder

1 handful fresh mint

(Optional): whipped cream + fresh raspberry or cherry

Directions

Combine banana, non-dairy milk, vanilla, protein powder and fresh mint in a high-powered blender. Blend until thick and creamy.

Top with whipped cream and a fresh raspberry or cherry.
