Britney Spears apologizes for smoking on a plane, sets the record straight
Britney Spears is speaking out following reports that she allegedly smoked on a recent flight -- an action that would violate Federal Aviation Administration regulations.
On Friday, People reported that Spears lit a cigarette while on board a flight. According to the report, the flight crew alerted authorities, who met the singer when the plane landed.
The pop star addressed the incident in an Instagram post on Saturday, sharing a video of herself on the plane and attempting to explain her side of the story.
"Some planes I've been on you can't smoke mostly but this one was different because the drink holders were on outside of seat !!!" she wrote in the caption.
"And said I want a cigarette so bad !!!" she continued. "I do so apologize to anyone I offended but the flight attendants always make sure I'm way at the back of plane anyways 🤷🏼♀️🤷🏼♀️🤷🏼♀️ !!! I thought officials greeted me as support and I was like WOW I feel special !!!"
She added, "The flight attendant called officials because I smoked a cigarette !!!"
ABC News has reached out to a representative for Spears but has not yet received a response.
TMZ was the first to report on the incident.
Spears, who was under a court-ordered conservatorship for 13 years, has been open about reclaiming her independence since it was terminated in November 2021.
During the conservatorship, her father, Jamie Spears, served as the conservator of her estate.
Since then, she has released her bestselling memoir "The Woman in Me," in which she reflects on her childhood, her rise to fame and defining moments from her career and personal life.
A biopic based on "The Woman in Me" was announced last year, with Universal Pictures securing the rights. The film will be directed by Jon M. Chu, known for "Crazy Rich Asians" and the "Wicked" film adaptation, with producer Marc Platt attached to the project.
