Poison control centers warn about glow sticks and kids on Halloween
This holiday season, poison control experts are raising the alarm about the potential dangers of glow products and kids.
Each Halloween, poison centers in the United States see a spike in the number of calls about glow products such as glow sticks and glow jewelry, according to data from America's Poison Centers, which accredits and represents 53 poison centers across the country.
On a typical day, poison centers around the country will receive around 20 calls total for glow products. On Halloween, that number jumps to around 260, according to America's Poison Centers.
Poison control experts say if the liquid inside glow products becomes exposed, it can cause irritation to the skin, mouth and eyes.
If liquid from a glow product, like a glow stick, leaks onto a child's skin, experts say to rinse the area immediately with water.
Symptoms of poisoning to watch for include stinging eyes, upset stomach and burning in the mouth or throat, according to America's Poison Centers.
Glow products should also be kept away from young children, and kids should be reminded not to chew glow sticks or glow jewelry.
