Tonka toy ride-on trucks voluntarily recalled due to potential burn and fire hazard
Tens of thousands of Tonka ride-on toy trucks are being voluntarily recalled as they may pose a burn and fire hazard.
Huffy and the Consumer Product Safety Commission announced the recall of 23,260 Huffy 12-Volt Children's Ride-On Tonka Dump Trucks Thursday, saying the toys can overheat. Huffy said it was contacting all known customers directly.
The toy company said although no injuries have been reported, they had received three reports of the toy's controller overheating and one report of a fire that "consumed" the toy truck.
When reached by ABC News, Huffy's parent company United Wheels emphasized its commitment to customer safety.
“Customer safety is our highest priority, especially for young riders, and we are committed to backing up the quality of our products," United Wheels' Vice President of Marketing Chris King said in an emailed statement. "After the single occurrence and consultations with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, we initiated a voluntary recall and have taken proactive steps to notify the public, retail partners, and directly contact all known buyers to provide a simple repair solution for the controller."
King added: "Our customer service team is available to guide customers through the process. Huffy has built a 130-year legacy based on trust, quality and accessibility, and we are committed to all of our customers and to continuing that legacy moving forward.”
Anyone with the recalled toy should immediately stop using the toy, Huffy said. Customers can reach out to Huffy for a free replacement controller.
The recall impacts model numbers 17362 and 17323, which are painted yellow and black with the "Tonka" label on the front and side of the toys. The toy dump trucks feature two seats, a steering wheel, four wheels, and LED headlights with a powered dump bed. They are 42 inches in length, 32 inches in width and 24 inches high, according to Huffy.
The toy dump trucks also bear date codes from 15623 to 18724, which are printed on a label placed under the toy truck body. Huffy said the first three numbers of the date code signify the day of the year while the last two numbers of the date code represent the year, meaning a date code of 15623 would translate to June 5, 2023.
The recalled Tonka dump trucks were made in China and retailed for about $300. They were sold at Sam's Club and Target stores nationwide and on the retailers' websites from June 2023 until March 2025.
