Bella Hadid opens up about living in her sister Gigi's shadow and more for Vogue's April 2022 issue
Bella Hadid is Vogue magazine's April 2022 cover star, and she is opening up about everything from her mental health to looking to the future.
For the cover, she was photographed by Ethan James Green in front of a blue backdrop wearing a pair of jeans and a backless ruffled Maison Margiela Artisanal draped top designed by John Galliano.
"Fashion can make you or break you," Vogue quoted Hadid in a caption alongside a photo of the cover shared on Instagram. "And if it makes you, you have to make a conscious effort every day for it not to break you."
In an interview with Vogue, the 25-year-old model opened up about living in her sister's shadow. "I was the uglier sister. I was the brunette. I wasn’t as cool as Gigi, not as outgoing."
Hadid added, "I always ask myself, how did a girl with incredible insecurities, anxiety, depression, body-image issues, eating issues, who hates to be touched, who has intense social anxiety — what was I doing getting into this business?"
She also revealed that she dealt with issues of lifelong comparison to her older sister by becoming a good actress and putting on a smile. Hadid felt like she had something to prove and for the past seven years, she claimed that she's never missed, canceled or was late to a job.
Expanding upon the silent battles faced within the fashion industry, author of "You Are More Than You Think You Are" Kim Snyder told "Good Morning America," one of the issues of the modeling industry is pushing this idea of conformity and idealized standards across the board."
She continued, "It's so healthy that now she is coming forward and saying image isn't really what's real. I'm human, I struggle as well."
Hadid also got Candid with the publication about regretting a nose job she got at 14. "I wish I had kept the nose of my ancestors," she said. "I think I would have grown into it."
She went on to say how the people have called her out for altering her appearance, but she claims to have never used filler. Instead, she says she's used age-old makeup hacks such as face tape to lift the look of her eyes.
While Hadid has had her share of struggles and difficulties through the years, the top model is looking ahead with a positive mindset and making sure everything she does in her personal life is to make sure that her mental state stays above water.
"Fashion can make you or break you," said Hadid. "And if it makes you, you have to make a conscious effort every day for it not to break you. There's alway a bit of grief in love."
