Amid all the speculation surrounding Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce's July 3 wedding, the couple managed to throw a curveball not many people saw coming, having actor and comedian Adam Sandler officiate their Madison Square Garden ceremony.

A representative for Swift confirmed in a statement Friday that Sandler officiated the ceremony, describing him as a "friend" of the couple who led a ceremony that "joined both families together."

Neither Swift nor Kelce have commented publicly about their wedding, which was reported to taken place in front of around 1,000 guests, including Jason Sudeikis, Stevie Nicks, Benson Boone, Ethan Hawke, Hugh Grant and many of Kelce's fellow NFL players.

ABC News has reached out to Sandler for comment.

While Sandler may have seemed like a surprise choice for officiant, he does have a long history with the couple, who announced their engagement last August.

Sandler starred in the 2025 film "Happy Gilmore 2" and Kelce had a cameo in the movie, which also included Kelce's dad, Ed, as an extra.

When Sandler was a guest on Kelce's "New Heights" podcast in 2024, he spoke about considering Kelce for a part as far back as writing the screenplay.

"I was thinking, we were talking about you playing my son while we were writing it literally like six months ago," Sandler said. "We were like, 'Imagine if Travis was my first baby, how funny that would be.'"

And in an interview with Jimmy Fallon in 2024, Sandler described Kelce, a star tight end for the Kansas City Chiefs, as a "stud."

"He's a very nice guy," Sandler said. "You guys would love him in real life. What a big, handsome guy -- funny and cool as hell. He's a stud."

Kelce has shared his own admiration for Sandler, saying in an interview last year that working with Sandler was "insane."

"You met him and he was the f------ best," Kelce said, describing Sandler as an actor he has "loved" his entire life and adding that he calls him by the nickname "Sandman."

When it comes to Swift, Sandler has very publicly declared that he is a huge fan of the Grammy-winning singer, as are his wife and two daughters.

"There's not a word my kids don't know. I know them too, by the way," he said of Swift's music in a 2024 interview with Conan O'Brien.

When he appeared on "New Heights" in August 2024, Sandler told Kelce directly how much he admires Swift.

"She means so much to our house," Sandler said, adding, "I love listening to her in the car. I love what she has to say, every message, every melody. The production. How cool she was. What she meant to young girls. What she means to women. What she means to guys doing the right thing in life."

Sandler said Swift has spent special time with his daughters, Sadie and Sunny, on many occasions, including on set at "Saturday Night Live" and when they attended the 2023 premiere of Swift's "Eras Tour" concert film.

In footage shared on social media at the time, Swift can be seen going out of her way at the premiere to hug and say hello to Sandler and his family.

"Anytime Taylor is laughing with you, my whole f----- family is like high-fiving," he told Kelce.
