Waking up with chapped lips and flaky skin? Hello, winter.
The winter months can really take a toll on one's skin, whether you suffer from dryness, cracking or itchiness.
"Good Morning America" asked board-certified dermatologist Dr. Whitney Bowe to share some pro tips and winter skin care products to help keep skin hydrated all winter long.
"During the winter months, you’ll want to show your skin barrier some extra TLC," Bowe said.
"Your skin barrier is like a protective shield that traps and holds moisture, but prevents allergens, irritants and pollutants from getting into the skin and causing irritation. As the air becomes colder and dryer, and as we crank up the indoor heat, this is all a recipe for a compromised skin barrier." Bowe added, "Hydrated skin is supple, plump, healthy skin."

Tip 1: Build recovery nights into your PM skin care routine
"Cleansing with a gentle moisturizer and warm water, and then focusing on hydration. Reach for a fragrance-free moisturizer with ingredients like ceramides, squalane, hyaluronic acid, prebiotics and postbiotics. Ideally, look for a moisturizer that’s clinically-proven to repair the skin barrier," Bowe said.
Tip 2: During the winter months, add an additional layer on top of your moisturizer
"If your evening skincare routine includes the skin cycling method of exfoliation night and retinoid nights, I don’t recommend using any occlusive ingredients overtop your exfoliating serum or retinoid, as this can cause increased irritation in the skin."
Tip 3: Add a lightweight and hydrating serum that contains peptides to your routine
"Some peptides are better for calming and soothing inflamed skin, while others are better for firming skin over time. Most peptides pull moisture into the skin so you get an immediate plumping and hydrating effect while the longer term effects are starting to work."
Tip 4: Eat some of your water by enjoying fiber-rich veggies.
"They will not only boost your water intake but keep you regular and keep your gut healthy. As you know, a healthy gut equals healthy skin. Fun fact: spinach is almost 100% water by weight."
Tip 5: Add a cool-mist humidifier in the room where you sleep to nurture and hydrate your skin
